Ebay wants to use your photos

Starting the end of August Ebay will automatically start using it's users photos as part of a online catalog for other users to place in their auctions.

If you want to opt out of "Photo Sharing" then you have to follow the directions below prior to August 31st. Otherwise Ebay will use your photos without permission.

They are sure keeping this one quiet.

    1) Log in to your account and click on "My Ebay"
    2) Click on the third tab that says "Account", and when the drop down list appears click "Site Preferences"
    3) The sixth option down on this page is "share your photos". On the far right click the link that says "show"
    4) A link will open right underneath that says "edit". Click this link and then you should be able to check a box that says you can opt out.

I will opt out, but unfortunately the damage will be done regardless. I guess we'll all have to read the fine print, pay attention to prior pics and ask questions more vigorously.

Hell most of the pics are from the web anyway, why not just completely destroy any integrity left. I do not use Ebay very often but I will be even more careful from now on. Thanks for the info!!!

I once tried to use eBay ... confused the fuckery out of me.

Don't know why it's so insanely popular, nor how medical morons can figure out how to use it, yet I was completely baffled by it.

Not being assholeish at all here, just genuinely unsure... but can someone explain why this is bad? You take a photo of the pair of shoes or whatever you're selling, it's just a functional photo to show other users what the item looks like, it's not a work of art, no one's ever gonna pay you royalties for it or anything... so why does anyone care?

Is it because one user,s photo might be of an item in a slightly different condition, so it's misleading to buyers, or something?

Basically, anyone can re-use a picture, and un-keen buyers will think that is the real item, and not bother to read the description that says the item is actually ripped in half (or some other such malfunction). The other potential is for straight up BS, not even having the item in the first place.

Eek, are they doing this on ebay.co.uk? Can't seem to find the "share your photos" option in my account (maybe I am just being blind):

Right now this is for U.S. only.

But those in the UK probably should keep a watchful eye on their account.
    Probably bound to happend eventually.
