Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. It will be a great and far safer day on the roads when computers are completely in control of cars and all anyone has to do is tell it where to go.

True, but it will be a hard sell here in the U.S. People here love their individuality too much to give up full control to a computer.

It wouldnt be a bad thing, but only if it was absolutely 100% safe & immune to viruses etc, not like now where sat nav systems take people down dead end roads or under narrow bridges that their vehicle cant get under. Imagine if it couldnt account for roadworks etc & it just smashed through cones on a closed motorway lane & killed workers, or if it drove you across fields because its mapping hadnt been updated and a road that used to be there wasnt anymore I agree though that some people are terrible drivers & would be far safer if they were driven by a computer that didnt overtake on blind bends etc

I really didn't think we had this sort of technology yet. ie: To drive good lengths along busy roads etc!

    Amazing!

I Robot? Well we see how that turned out in the film. I don't think this could work in motorcycles though, so I'm safe.

Would an end to asshole drivers be worth the loss of freedom if driverless ever became the mandate? Maybe, there's a lot of asshole drivers causing a lot of needless deaths.

I'd be all for it. computers cannot drink and drive, they cannot get ignorant and do 120 in a 45, and they won't get pissy at other drivers. about 40,000 people a year are killed just in america due to automobile accidents. most of those fatalities revolve around drunks and idiots who think cars are play toys. this is one case where public welfare would probably override issues of "freedom", which i don't see this as anyway.

I just can't imagine the insurance claims though when a computer car crashes? Who's at fault? Surely the software company?
