I was *this* close to being at the press junket with Natalie the other week. Unfortunately it happened on a day I was scheduled to work.
Didn't get to do a feature on it either, which is a bit disappointing.

What did KILL me though is the reaction this film has gotten! Half of the internet world are excited about another Aronofsky movie, the other half just want to see Portman and Kunis go at it, and the small minority of the remainder HATE the movie because it apparently misrepresents the world of ballet.

The killer was this ballet dancer who is currently the white swan in Swan Lake - there she was on BBC news nitpicking the most pathetic details about why this movie is basically an abortion (at least to her)...those being "real ballet dancers don't live with their mothers" and "some of the scenes were done with CGI and the ones that weren't, as a real ballet dancer you could tell" - the striking arrogance and dissatisfaction from the world of ballet has been noteworth, borderline hilarious, and if you ask me, a good indication of how things really are in the world of ballet - fucking pretentious.
Innocent victims of merciless crimes, fall prey to some madman's impulsive designs.

Step after step we try controlling our fate. When we finally start living, it's become too late.

It's actually a very sexual movie...
Which is why I'm finding it hard to find time to see it... without my kid. How can I pull a Pee Wee if she's right next to me?
Kidding... but I do wanna see it.

Liam and I just got back from watching it this evening. I cried all the way home from the cinema. The cinema's only 2 minutes' walk from our house, but still. Absolutely amazing, one of the best films I've ever seen. It's incredibly clever, beautiful, multi-layered with loads of different subtexts (you could say it's about ballet, perfectionism, sexuality, body image, mental illness, womanhood, dualism, art, the nature of creativity, youth, all sorts of things).

I think it may well be one of those ones that you either relate to or you don't, but if you do, it'll really move you.

For those who have not watched it and are looking forward to the girl on girl scene. You will be disappointed.

What were you expecting? Hardcore porn? It's pretty damn steamy all things considered.

It did not even show tits or ass. That scene was way over-hyped. IMO, you cannot have a good lez scene without nudity.

    That's signature worthy.

But c'mon dude....you expected to see Natalie Portman spread eagle or something? Besides....The point of the scene wasn't to arouse the boys in the room. They have special theaters for the kind of movie you're looking for.

    This one's for you...

lol @ the alternative trailer. I agree that anyone going to see this film for sexy times will be very disappointed. It's more about bodyhorror than sexy bodies. Lots of joint-cracking and ouchy skin picking and the general sensation of a body being a very physical and grotesque collection of organs and functions rather than something beautiful and ethereal.

Definitely nothing wank-worthy. Save your tissues for crying at the end.

While discussing this film with the little lady, she brought up a funny point. Putting it in spoilers for those that haven't seen it....

Black Swan is virtually a remake of Cronenberg's The Fly.

If you take out the telepods, and make it a bit more in the mind rather than reality....it's The Fly. She didn't mean that in a negative way, but you have to admit that the transformations and basic themes of the films could be considered similar.

There are many different combinations of sex scenes(psst...what you mentioned is one). Some of which I can't mention without spoiling the film. I'm sure if you searched, you could find them online.

And imo, it's defintely worth more than a download. I look forward to buying the blu ray.

I can't believe how popular this movie is among almost everyone I know. Did I see the same movie!? I'd rather sit and stare at a rancid, syphillitic CHODE for 108 minutes than watch this artificially pretentious, predictable, melodramatic trash again.

As far as I could see, it was basically an even less subtle re-make of Showgirls with some badly mis-judged attempts to weave in ripped-off Cronenbergian elements, but in a way that was utterly devoid of any of that director's emotional or intellectual punch. I just didn't give a watery turd about anyone or anything that that transpired; in fact, I wanted every single living character that set foot in front of the camera to die horribly (and only in this did the film satisfy me, at least partially).

While I don't think it's quite as bad as you make it out to be, I agree that it's getting a bit more attention than it should. As I've said before in this thread, it's a solid flick imo, but not oscar-worthy material. But hey....I guess the competition was limited in 2010? The Social Network is in the same boat. A solid flick, but not worth the large amounts of attention its getting.

I could see why you would dislike it so much, though. I actually really connected with it as a "coming of age" and pressure from society or peers sort of tale. Portman was pretty good with the role, but it was nothing outside of her usual range. She's been that good ever since The Professional(or Leon, I believe its called elsewhere).

Yeah. While I didn't dislike The Social Network anywhere near as much as this, I thought it was just a very ordinary, middle-of-the-road drama, nothing special.
