Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. If so, can we just stop having late-in-the-day sequels/reboots that basically say 'everything you invested in beforehand is being flipped upside down 'cos fuck you', or ones that just needlessly seek to invert anything and everything ... it's actually quite lazy and it's quite dismissive of the audience.

It's like the trend of rebooting/belated sequel-ing where you find the main character to be fucking miserable having lost everything (in a cheap shock reveal) they had previously fought for.

The Matrix sucks, let's be honest. The first film is decent even if it's incredibly over rated by its fans. But the two sequels it spawned were absolute shite. No surprises at all that this belated sequel (ahem...cash grab) is getting a meh reaction too.

    "Absolute shite" is pretty harsh.

They weren't as good and pure as the original movie, certainly, and they weren't without their flaws (overblown dialogue, inflated sense of self-importance), but they also had some epic action set pieces (the highway chase and burly brawl from #2, the coat check fight and the last battle of Zion were all awesome).

This 4th one looks pretty darn pointless, though. The Wachowskis (only one of them in this instance) really have struggled to nail a film this side of the millennium. Both "Bound" and "The Matrix" were great. Everything since has either been flawed (Matrix 2 and 3) or too unwieldy (Cloud Atlas - worth a watch, had some good stuff, but I won't be returning to it) or messy CGI overloads (Speed Racer) or whatever the fuck Jupiter Ascending was.

I liked it! It’s not the first movie at all, yet it references it very heavily. In a lot of ways, this movie feels like Wachowski’s Gremlins 2….
