Homepage of the Dead was a moment away from dying today

I had an automatic renewal fire through today for my hosting charges. It was around 3X what I paid last time (renews every 2yrs).

I contacted the company and the amount they were willing to reduce it by was so little, even after tens of minutes and me proclaiming the site had been with then for 25yrs and being forced to close it over a huge price hike was heart breaking, I was seemingly left with nothing to do but close up shop. I even asked to repeatedly speak to a supervisor etc etc. I was about to do the horrid dead but the line dropped/failed.

I contacted them again half an hour later and this time they about halved the cost. It's still around double my last cost, so annoyingly high, but I just didn't have the heart to turn off the life support

So the site lives on but with price hikes like that it's getting hard to justify

Happy the place is still going. But, seriously, if the site is costing you too much to keep going then it might be worth letting it end. No sense in getting into financial difficulties for a website.

A 3x price hike though? Fuck me. What was their justification for that?

It seems these days, companies think that they can just lob on any old price increase to their "product" and everyone will just play along.

When this comes up for renewal again Neil please put it out in the wild.
I would be more than willing to help with costs. If you don't want to do that then shoot me a message.
This forum has been very helpful to me for various sections of my life.

Just to set expectations - As it stands, this site will probably end in about 1yr. The hosting prices increased dramatically when I paid them this time last year, to the extent I don't feel I just justify them going forwards. So according to my diary, in about year....

Just had to pay the annual backup service bill which only adds to the costs...

    Quite the ride.

Gonna enjoy it while it's still rolling, though.

Perhaps the Facebook group version could take over afterwards, be revamped, whatever?

    We'll need a rescue station...

When I looked many years ago there was nothing within Facebook that offered a forum half as solid as say this one in features.

    I see.

Yeah, it's a very different platform in style and function. Rather than being able to revisit topics and dip back and forth, they kind of come and go. It's a far more fleeting environment than a forum like this where you can delve back into old topics, or revisit things intermittently.

Can you even set up the ability to have pseudonyms instead of real names (so folks would know who was who RE: HPOTD?).

This site will always be legendary. Appreciate having it up throughout the years. Even though I didn’t post as much, always enjoyed the banter and debates about my favorite zombie flicks.

But where else can I read debates about which happens first, the events of Day or Land?
