So what do silver gems mean?

Well, you have silver stars - in your case you have two silver stars under your "just been bitten". Gems are the square ones under "Member". If a "gem" is grey then the user is an 'unknown quantity', a stranger essentially. The more green gems you get then the more "known" you are, that's how I'd explain it anyway. I'd imagine the stars go gold once you reach Zombie Flesh Eater status, which is a big achievement.
