I was never really into Star Wars as a kid. Another BSG childhood here. While good, i find the series of movies quite bland although i agree that A New Hope is excellent.
TNG on the other hand is superb. I got into it when i was a student and they used to show it at 5pm on sky in the early days. I love the science of Star Trek - very believable and well thought out. I've recently bought the original series on HD-DVD and if anyones in any doubt about the benefits of HD, watch this and be blown away, seriously. Its something to behold but thats another argument

Can anyone convince me to watch DS9 as it kind of passed me by.

Wow, 50/50 split here. Interesting. I voted Star Wars. I am able to do so because to me, The prequels don't exist.

I like the Trek films, but Star Wars has always been my favorite. The original trilogy, that is. The prequels can be tolerated by themselves, but I don't consider them to be a necessary addition to the franchise.

And in honor of this thread, I have to ask the ultimate question of who shot first...han or greedo?

as i am sure everyone knows, han shot first in the original prints of the movie. that has to be one the most idiotic retro changes to a movie ever.

in fact, here is the original version of that scene.

Infact I don't regard Return as a sequel, just New Hope and Empire for me.

I saw the first Star Trek movie at the cinema and holy s**t, I fell asleep halfway through - talk about boring. I actually remember the reviews over here at the time of release and it was hailed as the 'dullest sci-fi movie ever made' by more than a few tabloids.

Oh and the Millenium Falcon s**ts on the Enterprise.

the first star trek movie has to be watched tripping on something - mushrooms, acid, etc. to be appreciated. it is a whole different and much more interesting movie under those circumstances.

as for the franchises - i think that star wars is mostly greasy kids stuff and appears more trite to me with every year that goes by.

I dunno i still enjoy the first three films in their original cut. and when viewed alone from the prequells they're still stand as very capable movies.

It's when you factor in the new abominations, the recuts, and all of that cannon bull**** that it degrades the whole mess down to something that's migraine inducing.

the real bitch of it is. star wars really is an excellent medium for storytelling. and there are a few really great examples of it out there. but it when you come back to Lucas driven stuff that it seems kinda pointless.

Treks just gone to ****, TOS was sci fi gold for it's ideas and characters, TNG was a worthy sequal though it fell victim to comparison and would never win against TOS, TOS fans refused to aknowledge it's strengths but now TNG is fondly remembered. DS9 also got the same reaction TNG did but its built it's own cult and following among Trekkers due to it's challenging Roddenberrys ideas and it's own storytelling, arcs and characters. the last two were a complete and utter joke abandoning their premise and squandering their potential (both character and stories) for some cheap SFX sequences.

The federation of commie socialists who are perfect and don't use money or violence and can't wait to tell new species how "holier than thou" they are whilst looking like total dicks in their crappy one piece outfits....

...Or Palpatines Galactic Empire that regularly "base delta zero's" uncooperative planets (unless they totally frag them with the mighty Death Star space station) and rolls out millions of these mutha funkers and sends them to dominate all and sundry....
