I now can't stand that "hold X so you stay crouched, ready for an ollie, yet somehow still maintain speed forever and your grinds can go for 10,000,000 feet before you launch yourself over a 2-story building" stuff. I prefer feeling like I'm doing some real-life skate stuff that's actually VERY satisfying to complete, and I don't have to worry about the real-life trouble of breaking bones.

For instance - in Tony Hawk if you see a set of 20 you can clear it first shot without having to figure out the best route to get a run up to it. Or if you wanna do a kickflip to a bluntslide, you just push two buttons. In Skate it can take a half hour to pull off either of these things so it's a true sense of accomplishment.
Indeed. Skate is the far, far superior franchise in my opinion. THPS 1-3 were great, then things just got way too silly with the yearly sequels and loss of innovation. It puzzles me that anyone could think otherwise, the difference in quality between the early and later TH games is staggering.

Dude, how can you say the games after the first three weren't as good? The graphics, number of tricks, levels, hell, even MUSIC was better in some of the later games (hardcore for #4). I'll admit that Skate is good, but... well, it's not a better video game than 4. Realism is for the real world. Give me 720 over Skate any day! Or just forget those two. I'm fine with Space Invaders.

Okay, first off - the game IS fun. It's not like I play the game going "this is so fucking boring but BOY IS IT REALISTIC! I'll keep playing just because of that"

Secondly - I'm not going to get on my skateboard and go try to gap a set of 10 into a nose blunt down a ledge, in real life. I don't know about you - but I'm getting too old and have a lack of insurance to be doing stuff like that. That's why this game is great to me.

Tony Hawk: Ride Face Plants with 114K Sold
With the NPD data for November having just been released, IndustryGamers has learned that Activision's "reboot" of the Tony Hawk franchise, Tony Hawk: Ride, has gotten off to a pretty slow start. The game sold a total of 114K units across the Wii, Xbox 360 and PS3 during the November NPD data period.

The press has been pretty hard on the title, yielding the game a pathetic 48 on Metacritic. GameSpot commented, "Busted controls and stripped-down gameplay make Tony Hawk: Ride an overpriced fiasco." Indeed, the $120 price tag was likely a major impediment for the game. Developer Robomodo, to its credit, tried to innovate with the unique skateboard peripheral, but many still felt uncomfortable and wished they had an option to use a traditional controller. Tony Hawk, who was deeply involved with the game's development, complained recently that critics weren't giving his game a fair shake.

Giant Bomb was even harsher: "The execution is such a miserable failure that it manages to splash even more mud on Tony Hawk's legacy. I'm left with a firm belief that whichever side of the Tony Hawk/Activision partnership has the out clause in the contract should just exercise it and part ways for good. Enough is enough."

If sales don't pick up, we do have to wonder what the future holds for the Tony Hawk franchise.
This could be the end of the franchise.

That's just fine with me. Tony's got plenty of money, and to contribute another game that's not really developing technology or adding anything original to the concept (besides basically one gimmick) is pointless. Give it up, Tony! You had a great run!

Yeah, I'm fine with that too. THPS1-THAW is all I need. I play Underground and THAW a hell of a lot, as I enjoy the stories, challenge and memories. I think maybe it is time for Tony to stop the franchise for a few years but I personally don't think it will happen. Too much has been put into the peripheral and Ride 2 is already in development. But he's going to have to make a controller option otherwise it will be the end.

I have played Ride, since I last commented, by the way. If it had a controller option, the game could be finished in 45 minutes - very basic! It's like he's trying to re-learn you the entire game again but using the board. I really liked riding vert though, it's a lot of fun. But not fun enough to warrent shelling out £100.

The price and no joypad use were the two main reasons I said "fuck you" to Ride.

Bring on Christian Hassoi's Pro Skater! You can skate all day, then pick up chicks and party all night. At the end of the game you can learn to cope with a meth addiction by going to prison and becoming "born again".
