Hell yes! The man comes around could be the best movie tune ever - Coupled with the excellent "society getting rapidly and brutally f**ked over by zombies" opening, it's a winner IMO

I liked DotD04 and I make no apollogies for this...I also think it was 10 times better than GAR's latest effort (as was [.REC]).
Oblivion gallops closer, favoring the spur, sparing the rein - I think we will be gone soon

I think it's an okay flick and fun to watch. There's no point comparing it to the original because they are not even trying to play in the same ballpark.

There's no way this movie could've been made standalone from Dawn '78. Just look at Dead Rising. You put zombies in a mall and you are forever a ripoff of Dawn '78.

I agree that watching the movie is better if you don't equate it with Dawn '78, but from the perspective of them creating the movie I think it would've been far worse had they tried to separate themselves.

The CJ character. The Michael Character, Ana, and Kenneth. Andy the gun shop guy. Steve (The Rich Snob), there is just a lot of cool things and characters in the remake.

    The Bad:

    Mekhi Pfifer
    His Preggo wife
    Baby plotline
Chick going after the ****ing dog.

The good easily outweighs the bad in this movie. Plus the DAWN remake is miles above Land in terms of entertainment value. I think it is also a tad better than Diary. However, I think Diary is better than Land.

This TOPIC should be moved to the DEAD Remakes section. This is not the place for it.

    Yep. Stoopid.

Most realistic part of the whole movie. You know SOMEONE is gonna pull something idiotic like this. Guaranteed.

If they'd taken a few minutes and planned out a decent rescue I could get behind it. But that spur of the moment split-second decision to rescue her was ridiculous. Assumedly they'd hashed out methods to get Andy from the gunshop to the mall and came up empty. What in the world would make them think getting Nicole had any better chances?

I'd probably have to give it another propper viewing but i was under the impression that the power was out and the supplies were dwindling anyway. Then when what happened in the baby scene happened that just pushed them closer to the decision.

I agree that the "plan" should have been more fleshed out and they were going about their preparations when the "dog crisis" happened. Everything snowballed from there and they kept messing up along the way which kept exacerbating the situation. Observe:

They were going to take andy with them but came to the conclusion that he would have been to weak by the time they made their move so they had to get food to him. After their experience in the garage they knew that the ghouls had no interest in dog flesh so they sent chips with a care package. When andy was letting the dog in a couple of ghouls got in as well and he was bit. Now if you pay careful attention, kenneth says "they got him". If you watch her face, Nicole takes that to mean that they got they dog and flips out. So she hijacks the truck. Nevermind how she got the keys from either kenneth or the old lady. So now they have to hatch a second plan in or to rescue the young security guard's "already dead girlfriend". If you notice not much thought went into that either or how the hell they were gonna get back. But they go on their rescue mission and get the girl. Unfortunately, they have a hundred zombies hot on their asses and have to rush out of there. Their adrenaline was flowing so people started flipping over buses because of turns that were too sharp and cutting eachother in half with chainsaws.

That whole thing was a mess and doomed from the start.

And another thing. I'll borrow a line from Harry Cooper. "Who the F**K gave you the right to decide for the rest of us?" I'm sure there would have been some who wanted to stay behind, but that went out the window when the ghouls were able to get in the mall. I know I wouldn't have gone on that suicide pleasure cruise they were planning, that's for sure.

They should have taken whoever wanted to go and whoever wanted to stay, let them. No one should have been obligated to do anything they didn't want to.

The keys were already in the truck. The old lady never took the keys out of the truck, when she got to the mall. She says that when Kenneth asks for the keys to the truck.

I only didn't like fast zombies, as I'm a slovenly piece of...
Other than that, it wasn't as bad as some seem to think twas.
Great make up, and it helped kick start the zombie craze again. Not a big fan of this song, as it's been used time and time again in movies, but the movie wasn't that bad...

The opening sequence was one of the better pieces of work in modern horror in my opinion (I actually think the one in land was well executed too if not hindered by some bad voice acting in spots), the musical choices throughout were all excellent especially the piece by Mr. Cash. There was some good acting, and some decent characters though with so many it is a shame we did not get a chance to develop them more in depth... instead we were left with just token bits here and there.

I am not a fan of fast moving zombies, and anyone who has known me through all the different versions of this site knows that but I will tell you this... as far as fast moving zombie flicks in the "modern era" this one was not bad at all in my opinion.

    ^^ Definately agree, apart from:-
    1) Needless tacky sex scene as the writers couldn't think of a better way to try and get some care/connection between the couple.
    2) Needless tacky contact lenses.
    3) Needless tacky godzilla scream(s).
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. To be fair, that song only ran at the very....very end of the film, right? I mean after the main arc of the story was already over and we were in epilogue mode.

The Man Comes Around is an awesome Cash song, though.

Im a total and avid defender of dawn 04, not that im a huge fan of the movie per say but i do think alot of the criticism aimed at it is very poorly thought out and downright petty, Lets face it, this movie never had a chance with most of us on here, people just hate it only becuase its a dawn remake, They had made up their mind long before they saw it and walked in there actually looking for things to pick out. Alot of the criticsm aimed at Dawn'04 is unfair and disproportional and as ive said many times before if it had a different name it would have fared much better with our community.

In terms of story, characters, effects, well everything.. it shits all over land and the box office figures showed this too, another reason why i think alot of hardcore romero fans hate it. Take neils criticsms about the zombies in dawn '04 there, 2) Needless tacky contact lenses and 3) Needless tacky godzilla scream(s). The only answer i have to this is these same effects are used in alot of zombie movies past and present and even in the walking dead, in fact there is one particullar zombie in the walking dead that sounds almost exactly like a zombie from dawn '04, yet only dawn 04 seems to get picked on for these, funny how we are dispositioned to pick on something when we dont like the idea behind it and we are more prone to ignore such flaws when we do like the idea, isnt it?

To give you an example of the other side of coin, the original dawn is probably the most loved film on here but i personally cant stand it, i think its by far the weakest film of the original trilogy. Its cheesy and flawed beyond belief, but these shortcomings are overlooked in the name of devotion, nostalgia and pure fanboyism.

Dawn '04 isnt the best movie out there and im not under any illusion that its going to be a classic but then again, outside of our little niche circle neither is the original dawn. Its a decent, enjoyable zombie action flick without the tacked on social commentry message, and i have no major gripes with it. Unlike ALOT of romeros work

Oh my god, Andy and I agree on two things in the same week. Hell must be freezing over.

I've lightened up on Dawn04 over the years. A lot, actually. I hated it when it was first released but i've grown to accept it as more of an action movie. It definitely still has it's flaws, but I can turn a blind eye to most of them and enjoy it every now and again. I think it's largest flaw is that the characters are very poorly written. After having seen the movie countless times over the years, I still don't know their names. Well....with the exception of Andy. But his name was plastered on the side of the building.

Pfff. A man much more fluent in your native tongue than i am once wrote: "George Romero's sequel to Night of the Living Dead is a more accomplished and more knowing film, tapping into two dark and dirty fantasies—wholesale slaughter and wholesale shopping—to create a grisly extravaganza with an acute moral intelligence... Romero's sensibility approaches the Swiftian in its wit, accuracy, excess, and profound misanthropy." - Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader

I completely agree with that statement. Dawn04 on the other hand is at best just an 'ok' action flick with flat and poorly written characters and Snyders trademark 'look I play videogames like you guys' camerawork

A little pro tip, Blind. That's not what they mean by smoking hot sex.
