Does anyone else think this is a load of cock?

I mean ... Britain Day? *ugh*

Teach kids to be respectful and give them a proper education and job prospects and not tax the sh*t out their arse, and you'll easily find Britishness.

Heck, even in adversity us Brits do it our own way. Us Brits don't run around waving flags all the damn time, we pick and choose certain moments to be very British and pour it all out in one bit glug, then build it up, find another outlet, repeat.

I've always found that kind of inherrent nationalism to be extremely dangerous.

What happens to these kids who are finding it harder to assimilate into British "culture" than natives? They will feel excluded no doubt.

Sticking this kind of moronic crap down kid's throats will make them feel even worse.

Anyway I very much doubt that any psychological study done on kids these days would produce results that basically say "the kid's are bad because they don't feel they can identify with the ground they're walking on" - no, the problems come from bad parenting, a lack of self respect and control, and failing educational standards - this is a white-wash over a very big crack in the wall.

I just don't see any way in which beating our chests and making "ug ug" sounds will somehow make the disaffected youth in this country want to be a productive member of society - this is further evidence of the Americanisation of the UK.

ugh, this is the kinda of idea that should stay over the pond, ameriicans are way mor epatriotic, us brits are "happy as long as the trains moving" type people who will only really celebrate when something worthwhiles happened.

...cant think of an example for right now though.

how about winning the rugby world cup?

    Sent us brits effing crazy.

I hate patriotism though - even if it is under the guise of something positive like winning a sport.

The 50 years since the Queen's coronation was a big deal. There were flags waving, street parties, hoardes of people along the road leading to the Palace...and Brown thinks we all need to be more patriotic?

I'd be a whole lot more patriotic if they we're taking so much f***ing money from me and wasting it all!
Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. Indeed, it's hard to be patriotic when you despise the gubment - and yes, I despise Labour, just so that's extra clear - so it really makes it hard to be proud of your own country...but on the other hand, I ain't jumping ship because of those wankers...so I guess that's patriotic in it's own right.

    F*ck dat sh!t

I have virtually no interest in developing a sense of "unity" with a bunch of strangers just because we happen to inhabit the same patch of dirt. It's never really made much sense to me, other than as a rather boring way of pandering to our pack instincts. And if I want to indulge myself in that, I'll go to a gig and scream along with a bunch of other fans for a couple of hours Job done.

What I do hate is this devolution garbage. I'm Scottish (living in England, on the cusp of Wales), but I count myself as British first and foremost.

What with Scotland and Wales having different benefits, systems and so forth, it just creates ill feeling in England towards the other countries, which is all a result of yet more social engineering. It should be the British system, British benefits etc.

Basically it's causing the populace to all pull away from the flag, so-to-speak, meanwhile in America - despite the variety of different opinions and people and politics - it all works towards the one flag.

What with this devolution crap, the Scottish flag, Welsh flag and English flag are all becoming tools of political expression (or even racist expression from some nutters). Instead of all pulling apart, we should all be pulling together - towards the British flag - to make the best Britain for all of us living here, not the best Wales for the Welsh, the best Scotland for the Scottish and England struggling in between it all.

    amen. amen. amen.

i have absolutely no interest in "unity", "community" or any of the other watch words that folks who organize this kind of grabasstic crap come up with. just because you have moved in next door to me does not under any circumstances mean that i want to hold hands with you and sing kumbyhah (or however the fu*k that stupid song is spelled) with you.

i am not patriotic about america at all-about ohio, hell yes. i am not a flag waver and i do not chant that silly "U S A" chant during the olympics or at any other time for that matter.

nationalism sucks - period. it is the product of people with very small minds and very big agendas.

so these people should put away the flags and the signs and their stupid fu*king slogans and simply live as people without regard to who is #1 or any of that other crap.

There's a vast, yawning chasm between the BNP and being British.
