If you can get one there, an arc welder can give you a perfect flash for simulating lightning. Probably not suggested if you are shooting in an actuall storm unless you can really, really protect it.
Or, if you can find one in a used camera shop or something, old-style flashbulbs can be good also. Does depend on the particular bulb, though, some of the really old 1940's newsman-style flash bulbs flash a little slow and might give you a frame or 2 more flash than you would want. You might try to use an electronic flash, but the flash is so fast that more often than not you won't see it in the shot because the flash starts and ends in between frames. But if you hit it a few times, odds are you'll get something.
Most regular lightbulbs, especially bright ones, take too long to ramp up and down when you hit and kill the power, probably wouldn't look so great, but you might be able to combine it with some post work. Dunno, I haven't seen them work all that well fro this type of thing myself.

i didnt think dj could have used something like it for deadlands but it really does give your films a more professional edge.
