    Zombie Hypothetical: New Commers

    This is hard for me.

In a recent post i was trying to think of all the things that would be hard for me to do, or not do as a survivor in the zombie world post apocalypse.

I have a solid plan and I am sure some of you nay way have read it, I have posted it on at least two versions of these forums though I can not seem to locate it now.

Essentially it involves building "up" ultimately, and in the short term fortifying a local structure that is nearly perfect for the job.

I have considered water supply, self sustaining food growth, live stock, foraging, security, and defense.

    Here is the hypothetical...

You are in your "sanctuary". Someone (A young girl for the sake of the story) approaches begging for your help. You have very strict rules based on rations due to a poor harvest, mold, whatever and those in charge (say voting council) has decided no new members are to be allowed in. That you are at capacity.

In the distance yo see the shapes of the dead coming through the mist towards the girl and where you would be able to "haul them up" to safety using a wench system.

    What do you do?

1- Walk away leaving them to their own devices?

2- Explain to them that you can not allow them to enter and to run?

3- Save her bringing them into the sanctuary knowing it might mean your being punished?

4- Put her out of her misery?

5- Take her place on the ground after bringing her to safety?

6- Another option not listed here?

(Again meant to be fun not over analyzed to death)

Probably number 4. If I were going to be eaten, I'd want someone to put me out of my misery.

I was thinking that... classic Freudian slip there!

I'd let her in until the zombie threat had moved on, and then if the powers that be decided to kick her out once it was safe to be outside, then so be it.

Combination of 4 and 6. Shoot her dead, but not out of compassion; it's out of our own self-interest. If she is left to fend for herself, she will eventually be half-eaten, and get up as yet another zombie. You cannot allow new zombies to be made.

You see.. the winch is operated by female employees of the local tavern, it is sort of part of their job responsibility to serve mutton, ale AND operate the winch...

No? Not buying it huh? Okay... Um... my bad.

    3. I think that my skills would far outweigh any minor (pun intended) logistical encumberance, so I'm not too concerned over a punishment.
Colonel "Bat" Guano: Okay. I'm gonna get your money for ya. But if you don't get the President of the United States on that phone, you know what's gonna happen to you?
    Group Capt. Lionel Mandrake: What?
Colonel "Bat" Guano: You're gonna have to answer to the Coca-Cola company.

I like this option - there's compassion there, but then you're also looking after yourself and the others with you. Honestly, in a situation like this, you're going to have to think out all options in a brutally frank way.

Well, guess that leaves me out......

The simplest way to answer would just be to say "#6" and leave it at that, but thats no fun....

So in an effort to be brief, I'll say this...it is hard for me to imagine that I would find myself in a sanctuary that I did not at least have a large hand in initiating, if not outright creating on my own. So if it was "my" sanctuary, I would insist on an overriding veto vote on all matters, similar to the U.N. Security council. So I would bring her in, and figure out what to do with her later.

If for the sake of this argument, I did find myself in a sanctuary that I had no "authority" in, I would take this opportunity to petition to the council that if we turn away a living being to die at the hands of the zombie enemy that we have lost all our humanity, and have to let her in. If all arguments failed, I am not sure what I would do until actually having to face the decision. I would definitely NOT take option #1 or #5.

#3. mercy and compassion are the highest expressions of what make us human, without them we are nothing more than brute animals.

besides, rules are made to be gotten around anyhow.

I think this is very much true. If you are fighting for survival you are fighting for man because he is worth saving, I am not sure people so cold and callous as to not save a defenseless person in need are worthy of saving.

I would I think bring her in and deal with the backlash later.

Honestly whatever that might be. Again you don't know because you are not there, I do know however that me being who I am when someone is in trouble i am the first person to stop and try to help. It is how I am wires, I can not turn my back on who I am.

Good answer and nice embellishment! I can already see the warlord in charge starting to tear up as you remind him of his lost humanity

Plus, prime breeding stock is needed!

I say 3! Between Scip's answer above and Krakenslayer's common sense-compassion, there's good enough reason to figure something could be worked out, at least in the short run to keep the gal safe.

However, I, of course, don't know for certain.
