    A Good Ghost film?

    Looking for suggestions...

So, I've been on the hunt for a while now for a good
    supernatural-ghost-haunting type film.
There are a lot out there, but, as usual the quality is a bit
    of a mixed bag.

It doesn't have to be pee-your-pants gory or anything,
but chilling with a decent story is a must.
A good solid 'haunting' type movie.

Does anyone know of any good suggestions or must see??

    Cheers, Rich

PS. a few of my old favourites are -

    The Changeling (1980 - George C Scott)
Ghost Story (1981 - Fred Astaire, Alice Krige - 'The woman who played the borg queen in ST! in her early career)

My favorite is Guillermo del Toro's "The Devil's Backbone". It is Spanish language with English subtitles, but don't let that dissuade you. It is really a great film.

Poltergeist is my favorite straight-forward ghost film.

Other mentions, some of which dabble in other genres such as comedy:
    The Shinning
    The Frighteners
    Beetlejuice

That's all I've got at the moment. Just avoid any and all of the tween paranormal activity type movies of the past 10-20 years...

You just named my two "go to's" in the genre.

Let's see..."The Fog" is also one of my favorites. Beyond that, in no particular order, & at the risk of mentioning some that EVERYONE has seen...

    "The Sixth Sense"
    "The Ring"
    "Stir of Echoes"
    "The Others"
    "Haunted"
    "What Lies Beneath"
    "Fragile"
    "The Awakening"
    "Grave Encounters"
    "Mama"
    "Wind Chill"

For good big budget spfx fun I should mention the remake of "13 Ghosts" as well. Tony Shaloob is great, F. Murray Abraham, Mathew Lillard, Shannon Elizabeth. The Ghosts are awesome. Love the special feature on the DVD where you can access a bio on all of the them.

"The Woman In Black" is a good old fashioned one too. (Only seen the BBC version. Saw about half of the recent Daniel Radcliff version, but haven't finished it yet.)

Based on a short story by M. R. James, though the more recent remake is totally different from the story. There are other stories of his that could stand to be adapted to film. Lovecraft was a big fan of his.

Haven't seen the new version. John Hurt is in it yeh? Might see if I can check it out.

In fairness, 'Whistle and I'll Come to You' is quite over rated to be honest, but it does what it says on the tin. The pay off is just too understated for a modern audience, so it requires the viewer to try and get...um...into the spirit of things, as it were.

The new version with Hurt is decent but the original with Hordern is the one id recommend. Among the newer James adaptations "View From a Hill" is awesome as is "Number 13". Both are exceptional. James is one of my big interests in horror fiction and I would highly recommend the adaptations for "The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral" , "The Treasure of Abbot Thomas" , "Warning to the Curious" ,"Lost Hearts" , and "The Ash Tree" all were adapted by the BBC. I think they are available in a.DVD set.

Matter.of.fact, Barchester Cathedral is one of my all time favs in any genre.

Other recommendations: Schalken the Painter (Le Fanu story), the signalman, the uninvited, the legend of hell house, the haunting63, the house that dripped blood.

Schalken might be hard to find but it is well.worth the effort.

Can't believe I forgot to mention "Session 9". Is it a supernatural/ghost story? Maybe. Watch it & decide for yourself...

Ju-On and Ju-On 2 are two good Japanese ghost movies and they are both better than the Americanized remakes known as The Grudge movies.

Also some of my personal favorites are:

    The Shining
    Carnival of Souls
    The Blair Witch Project
    The Ring
    The Others
    The Skeleton Key
    Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow
