What I find interesting is this type of stuff seems relatively normal....in the sense of how often it seems to occur It seems like whenever a community is put under stressful forces they seem more likely to get all crazy about some mundane happenstance. Economic stresses like: loss of industry lack of jobs or increased competition for jobs crippling debt I think: These issues inflict a great deal of anxiety on people and more often than not these people are poorly equipped to deal with them They either dont understand the given issue at all, misunderstand the causes of the issue, and/or incapable of solving the issue. So perhaps they are compelled to be proactive about something that they perceive as a positive action... If they cant fix the issues that cause the anxiety they try to fix something else instead.
