    Child-Beating 101

Saw this being discussed on another site:

'Stressed' teacher is charged with attempting to murder boy, 14, in classroom attack

A TEACHER was last night charged with attempted murder after an incident in which a 14-year-old pupil was left with serious head injuries.
Peter Harvey, 49, had recently returned to work after suffering a stroke brought on by stress, it was reported yesterday.

He is said to have lashed out as pupils sang "I'm staring at the psycho in the mirror" to a Michael Jackson tune.

    Jack W
ADVERTISEMENTaterhouse, 14, remained seriously ill in hospital last night after the incident, in which the science teacher allegedly struck out with a metal weight.

The incident occurred during a lesson at All Saints' Roman Catholic School in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, on Wednesday morning.

Harvey was last night charged after being questioned by police about the attack and remains in custody. He is due to appear before magistrates today.

It is understood he was also questioned about assaults on another boy and a girl at the school at the same time.

Police would not confirm if the two were hurt while trying to protect Jack.

Officers were called to the school, in Broomhill Lane, after paramedics found Jack unconscious in a pool of blood at the entrance to a classroom.

There were more than 20 pupils in the classroom at 11am on Wednesday when it appears that a row erupted between the boy and the teacher.

The incident reportedly began after a schoolgirl swore at Harvey and tore a textbook.

Harvey is said to have kicked her bag, telling her: "If you damage school property, school will damage your property."

As she fled to reception, his class is reported to have started singing the taunting lines inspired by the Michael Jackson hit Man in the Mirror.

Harvey, who lives locally, remained in custody at Mansfield police station last night after officers decided to charge him.

Jack was taken to the King's Mill Hospital in Mansfield on Wednesday, where his condition deteriorated.

He was transferred later that day to a specialist head injury unit at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.

Police said there was grave concern for his life on Wednesday, but his condition, while it remains serious, had since stabilised.

Another boy and a girl, both aged 14 and in Jack's Year 9 class, were allegedly assaulted during the same incident. They did not need hospital treatment.

Internet sites have been set up dedicated both to Jack and to Harvey, and a leafleting campaign supporting the teacher is being planned.

A team of 12 officers has been questioning the boy's classmates with their parents present.

And forensics officers have examined the classroom where the alleged incident happened.

The classroom was reopened yesterday, but was not used for lessons.

A team of police has been questioning Jack's classmates, and forensics officers have examined the classroom where the alleged incident happened.

Maureen Cobbett, headmistress of All Saints' School, informed parents in a letter that "a student was injured and has been taken to hospital" but said it would be inappropriate to comment further.

Detective Superintendent Adrian Pearson said: "Obviously, the whole class is traumatised by what has happened."

A support campaign for the teacher? What the fuck does he deserve one for? Stress and strokes are no reason to attack students; he should have taken time off and learned some stress management. I know it's easier said than done, but he shouldn't have let himself get to the point of psychotic episodes.

To be fair, if kids are acting up and generally being bastards, they deserve to be punished ... not beaten up etc naturally, but I think it's a side of the story that needs to be flagged up more - the dude flipping out was way over-the-top, but it didn't come out of nowhere, it was because of the kids being unruly.

It's like these kids who get shot or stabbed, and the parents always say "oh they were such angels" - well what the fuck was your "angel" doing scruffing about in the middle of the night on the streets getting into trouble then?! They're literally children, it's a school night, and they're shitting around abouts outside past midnight - COME ON!!!

There is also a problem with the UK education system now in that teachers don't have the powers they used to, to deal with problem children - by which I don't mean beating them up, duh - but then again the UK education system is a fucking shambles anyway, and indeed I think that is part of the reason the rowdy kids are getting rowdier. The gubment's ideas of how to deal with problem kids are also retarded - like mixing all academic abilities together randomly, instead of sticking with the sensible 'setting/streaming' system which actually worked - and indeed, the idea the gubment had of rewarding bad kids who'd managed to not be bad for a while with iPods and trips to Alton Towers etc.

I tell you, there's plenty of people in this country that need to have power stripped from them, and plenty of would-be parents who need to have their junk neutered.

This teacher dude though ... bloody nora, way to over-react!

Still, there's plenty of kids out there that could really use a literal clip round the ear (not a pummelling of fists, of course), but a bloody good telling off and a proper punishing.

I dare say that's a classic line, but this whole business is just horrible.

As far as the teacher is concerned, maybe it was brain trauma related to the stroke?

I get the image of you in a Blues Brothers suit/hat/glasses cursing while being repeatedly whacked with a ruler.

Any one else think that a big part of the reason our education system sucks is because the children for the most part make it virtually impossible to do what they're there to do?

When a teacher has to spend a significant portion of the scholl day disciplining instead of teaching what do we expect our children to learn?

Dude, no offence but you havent seen what absolute little shits UK kids are becoming at the moment, im not suprised that teacher snapped to be fair. We were always cheeky & a bit mischievous at school, but its at the point now where teachers are regularly attacked by both kids & their parents in UK schools now

I agree. Apparently, he was a very well-liked and respected teacher before this occured. For those who do not under what brain trauma does to people, it changes them. Mostly for the worst. A lot of people are never quite the same after suffering a stroke. I have seen it personally a countless number of times.

Some have behavioral changes that could be very violent or passive. Others cannot even talk or feed themselves.

Exactly. I think the study shows that teachers today spend almost 30%+ of their time dealing with these little shits when they should be teaching the kids who want to learn.

When corporal punishment was allowed in the school system you didn't have these issues, if they did, the parents usually gave them another beating which for the most part curbed a lot of that behavior, but today these little fuckers run rampant with the knowledge of "If you touch me I will sue."

Bring back corporal punishment and you will watch these little bastards shape up in no time.

In all fairness, I'd probably have done the same. Doesn't mean it's okay, though, I don't think institutionalised corporal punishment is the answer but I really can't find it in my heart to blame this guy at all - you can't get away with threatening and chanting abuse at people in real life, I'm not saying it's a good thing to have happened but here's hoping if anything comes out of it then it's that these little shits will have learned their lesson.

I agree, but in my opinion, in the US anyway, there is plenty of blame to go around, though not in equal proportions.

You have children who are largely brought up nowadays to be little self-satisfied fucks with an over developed sense of self-entitlement, knowing they can get away with murder; parents who are overburdened and not putting in their time with their kids/raising them and instilling no discipline or values; Teacher's unions who are all too often more concerned with seeing that the vocation of teacher serves their own ends as a viable career, as opposed to serving the interests of the children and society; and politicians and their institutions who seek to limit liability, look to easy (read: populist) answers for complex problems and invest too little money and/or invest the funds in the wrong places. And each of the above offenders feeds off the other and adds to the problems till you have one big loop of problems that no one person, institution or law can easily solve.

The thing of it is child protective services makes it so you CAN'T beat your kids. So what's left. They don't fear anyone or anything. Maybe fear is too strong of a word but they lack a healthy respect for authority and their parents which ,imo, is the cornerstone for a good upbringing.

Of course kids want to do their own thing, they're kids!! So did we when we were young. The diffeerence is that we'd get a foot up our asses if we acted out and now there is no danger of that happening to them today.

I like to use the nuclear option analogy. The U.S. never INTENDS on using nukes but the the option is on the table and that keeps everyone in line.

With the way things are now days there's no nuclear option on the table when it comes kids. It's as simple as that.
