Who is the finest horror director other than Romero?

Simple enough, who do you think is the finest (other than Romero) horror director of all time? I'm saying other because for me Romero will always be # 1 to the maority of us.

There are a ton of amazing directors to choose from, but the ones I mentioned above have been some of the "primary" horror directors of all time -- whether you love them or hate them. Feel free to select other and do share who and why you feel the "other" is superior.

I know I probably missed some great ones above, non-intentionally mind you, but I would love to see a wide range here -- and I'm sure this can lead to some really fascinating discussion. I do think the individuals I mention above have done some amazing work though.

I know I'm going to get some heat for saying it, but I'm going to go with Shyamalan.

I'd vote Hitchcock as probably one of the finest directors ever, but as far as horror director solely? No.

Carpenter, Argento, and Fulci all have top billing, as the other folks in this list, but I've been extremely disappointed especially with Carpenter's films made over the last twenty years.

For me, Shyamalan really speaks to me in his films. "Signs" is one of my favorite horror flicks -- just a damned good movie, I think. I also really dig "The Sixth Sense" and "The Village" as well. While he's hit a rough patch with his last few films, I'm really looking forward to the work he will be producing since he is still relatively young.

Raimi, because it's up there. You know, I just like how he does different stuff... and injects the humor, but still makes it fun... in a scary way.

    Cronenberg. Too many amazing films.

Edit: M. Night Shyamalan? What's he doing up there?

John Landis? He did American Werewolf and Thriller, what else?

Fulci is up there but Bava isnt?

    Wot no Hooper or Dante?

I almost went with Cronenburg, But the Thing tops just about everything else. Mix that with Halloween and Mouth of Madness. . . well. . . Carpenter wins. . . .on this list.

My favorite horror movies aren't really directed by "horror" directors though.
William Friedkin's Exorcist, and Kubrik's The Shining to name a couple.

A good number of good ones on the list. Rami, Cronenberg, Craven. But for me...

    Halloween
    The Fog
    Prince of Darkness
    In the Mouth of Madness

(as well as Escape From New York, Big Trouble in Little China & They Live which aren't horror...)

    And of course THE THING

    John-mutha fuckin'-Carpenter y'all.

I voted Carpenter also. I love most of his films...not all but a lot of them. M. Night Shyamalan is a director I love but don't consider a horror director.

there is one major flaw in the wording of the poll - it assumes that we all think romero to be the finest horror director.

He is very much like GAr in that respect, plus he has had the commercial success to back it up as well.

    Cronenberg all the way.

I like the writer/director thing that most of them
    have going for them.

Bit no other human could commit Naked Lunch to film
    other than Cronenberg.

Though I do beleive that Carpenter is one
of the better on that list for sure.
The Thing was great, and Cigarette Burns
was one of the best MOH episodes.
