    Originality in Hollywood?

I think that at one point or another, we've all bitched about Hollywood's seemingly lack of originality in the last few decades. Turns out that it actually IS getting worse. 2011 will hold the title of the most sequels released within a year with a total of 27 sequels.

Here's a list by Box Office Mojo:

The second movies are Cars 2, Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules, The Hangover Part II, Happy Feet 2, Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil, Johnny English Reborn, Kung Fu Panda 2, Piranha 3DD and Sherlock Holmes: The Book of Shadows.

The third movies are Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son, Madea’s Big Happy Family, Paranormal Activity 3 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

The fourth movies are Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Scream 4, Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn (Part One).

The fifth movies are Fast Five, Final Destination 5, Puss in Boots, X-Men: First Class and Winnie the Pooh.

The seventh movies are The Muppets and Rise of the Apes.

The eighth movie is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two
This beats out 2004's record of 24. Now...complain!

Well, crap. I... Oh, at least I won't have to worry about wasting money on theaters this year!
"But, the last 'Final Destination' was CALLED 'The Final Destination'! Doesn't that mean it's the last one?!" - 2D
"Mate... you've still a lot to learn about Hollywood... but yeah, I could play Jack Sparrow... Johnny Depp should stick to things he knows... like, that iguana in the desert, or whatever. Now where's that blasted rum?!" - Murdoc
"I'm glad to see more animated films of course, but Cars? I always felt that was Pixar's weakest. If they're not careful, the Disney curse will rub off on 'em." - Russ
"This is the reason that the last movie I saw in a theater was Ponyo. Miyazaki is the greatest! Oh, I mean, um... '...' " - Noodle
"ZZt! Bzzz, zt!" - Cyborg Noodle

It's funny when they announce before the film's release that it will definitely be the last one. I think they also did it about four "Saw" movies ago. You see how that turned out. Never underestimate the power of the cheap tween horror flicks.

I know most don't, but I really enjoyed Cars. Their top three weakest would be Wall E, Bug's Life, and Incredibles, imho.

Funny, I can't think of any Pixar films I didn't like... except Cars... maybe it's just because of the voice-acting... or the fact that I don't give two squits about automobiles...

    Random thoughts about the list:

X-Men: First Class is a prequel, that counts as -1. So when you add that to the franchise, you get two movies (three minus one), meaning that X-Men: The Last Stand never happened. Which is a good thing. A very good thing. "Hey, Kelsie Grammar as Beast, this movie is awesome! ....Wait, why is Bullet Tooth Tony dressed like the Juggernaut?"

If you're counting Rise of the Apes and the Muppets as part of the original franchises and not new ones, then shouldn't Sherlock Holmes: Book of Shadows be something like the fiftieth movie in the series?

The wife will love that a new Winnie the Pooh is being released. I don't see what the big deal is, since Eeyore is clearly the superior character. Clearly.

Am I the only one that has never actually heard of Hookwinked? I seriously do not know what the hell that is. Also, I was only vaguely aware that the Chipmunks had a sequel, although I seem to recall a really old Chipmunks cartoon movie where they were racing around the world in balloons against other chipmunks in drag. Or girl chipmunks. Whatever.

Harry Potter? .....never heard of it. Although judging from the name, it's truly impressive that a porn has had so many mass market releases. Oh, wait, isn't that the franchise where Voldemort killed Cedric and he resurrected as a vampire that falls in love with unattractive mortals and whines about it?

I'm actually looking forward to Kung Fu Panda 2. No, really, I am.

I heard that Paranormal Activity 3 is being filmed by taking a million pictures and forming them into flip books. That's the only way that it could possibly be more annoying than the camerawork from Paranormal Activity 2.

It isn't so much which entry in the franchises they are, but the fact that they're ideas spawning off of previous films. Hence the "originality" title.

"Hoodwinked", not 'hookwinked'. It's a vastly underrated animated comedy based on the old Little Red Riding Hood story. Me and my sister love it.
You don't know Chipmunks? You don't know gravy.

If that's what you're basing it on and not necessarily "sequels", it's much worse for the coming year. You've got both Thor and Captain America, which are based off of something like 130 years combined of source material (and when you consider that they both have their own title while appearing in both the Avengers and nearly all the Marvel crossovers, that's a LOT of material). I Am Number Four is based off of a book. The Smurfs (I kid you not) is another 80s icon "transitioning" into a big budget modern movie.

Speaking of sequels, A Very Harold and Kumar Christmas is set to come out in December.

Is that picture of Rosie superimposed on one of John Belushi? Because my mind immediately went to Belushi.

It's actually the body of Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the 9-11 mastermind.

Fucked up sure but tell me that doesn't look natural, like the head didn't come with that body?
