Looking for old movie title

I have been searching for the title of a film I saw years ago. It was probably made in the late 70's and I think it was an australian film. It was about a group of young people (the guys were like punk rock types I think) that went to an asylum to visit someone. Turns out the docs have been experimenting on the patients and they were all turned into zombie-like things. The 2 parts I remember are: -On the way there they were on a ferry and got into a fight with some locals. -they escaped the asylum and made it to a diner where they barricaded themselves in and the things from the asylum were trying to break in. That's about all I remember but this has been driving me Nuckin' Futs!!! Anyone know the movie??

It wasn't "Bad Taste" was it? I think they were aliens messing around with stuff in that, and it's a long time since I saw it.
