I'll keep my eye open for UK numbers when we "officially" get it on the 5th.
That said, this is a US production so it will need US numbers to drive it forward and keep it ticking over. Really hope to see the US numbers sustained. :)

Woohooo.
I've posted this elsewhere but anyway here goes.
Some numbers.
TWD had 5.3m viewers.
Mad Men had 900,000 with 1.8m for the heavily promoted 2nd season.
Breaking Bad had 1.4m rising to 2m for the 3rd season.
Bearing in mind that AMC had faith with the low numbers and stuck with the above shows, I would say that TWD is a smash. Not to mention the overseas markets. What was it? 120 countries.
2nd season announcement next please

fantastic. so far everyone i told to watch the show has emailed, called, or texted me today thanking me for hounding them to watch. glad all that hot air i expelled about how great this show was gonna be wasn't wasted breath.
and like kg said, with this show's numbers eclipsing those of both mad men and breaking bad, and the general fever this show's pilot audience is now displaying, it's pretty much a lock on the 2nd season.

but if only half of the 5+ million tune back in next week, they'll still be putting up numbers to rival BB or MM.
and everyone i know is now talking about telling everyone they know about tuning in for this series. i think we've unleashed a monster...the only downfall is gonna be the inevitable shit-storm of knock-offs, imitations, and shitty zombie films & projects that are green-lit with the hopes of sharing the limelight with TWD.

(New York, NY – November 8, 2010) AMC announced today the renewal of “The Walking Dead” for a 13-episode second season. Since debuting Sunday, October 31, “The Walking Dead” has broken ratings records, with the series reaching more Adults 18-49 than any other show in the history of cable television.
Today’s announcement also includes Fox International Channels’ (FIC) global renewal for a second season, following record-breaking premiere ratings in 120 countries in Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East. “The Walking Dead” was the highest-rated original series premiere ever to air on FIC simultaneously worldwide.
“The ‘Dead’ has spread!” said Charlie Collier, President, AMC. “No other cable series has ever attracted as many Adults 18-49 as ‘The Walking Dead.’ This reaffirms viewers’ hunger for premium television on basic cable. We are so proud to be bringing back ‘The Walking Dead’ again, across the globe.”

More great news the ratings have gone up. These are the most important ratings to me as the show finds it's audience
Up & Up & Up (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/blogs/live-feed/walking-dead-rises-third-episode-45444)
The Walking Dead went up to 5.1 million viewers, 3.3 million adults 18-49.
That's right between where it premiered wtih 5.3 million and its second episode of 4.7 million.
In case you were wondering, 2.1 million of those in the adult demo were male, which is a pretty strong tilt. AMC has already renewed the show for a second season.

Even with blemishes, and I certainly maintain there are some, it's miles better than most zombie films that come out. There have been and will continue to be WTF moments as the show goes along, I just hope they stay (despite some veering away already done) with a somewhat grounded approach to the characters.

I don't know if any of you caught that interview with (I forget his name) TWD writer/co-director (?) following the premiere. He was asked why the zombies couldn't smell the characters hiding under the cars. He shrugged his shoulders and said something like they only added that ability to their zombies in season 1 to convey that theirs were a little different from the zombies in other films (paraphrasing of course). But the way my brain works, I remember things like that and was puzzled when they didn't detect the characters under the cars. Even my girlfriend who really isn't into the whole zombie thing remembered that aspect from season 1 and asked me about during that scene. I was like, "Dunno... maybe there's a strong smell of gasoline or something."
kidgloves
18-Oct-2011, 10:02 PM
I think Kirkman said that zombies arent bloodhounds. Add in gasoline, rotting corpses and food and its plausable that they couldn't smell the group.
bassman
18-Oct-2011, 11:03 PM
I've never been completely convinced that the walkers can smell the living. After all, we just have the people in episode 102 assuming that's how they know. Much like the Venus Probe in Night, it's just a theory. That doesn't make it the fact of the series.
They could've just as easily passed by those walkers in the same way Shaun and his friends and family did. They were acting like zombies and were also gory like most walkers. For me, that's enough for them to sneak by as long as they did. After all, the walkers didn't attack until Glenn foolishly started panicking and talking to Rick.
Even if Kirkman wants to stick to the smell-but-no-bloodhound theory, i'm still thinking it could have just been the appearance and performances...

though this is good news, i really hope AMC doesn't go down the wrong path with their new-found success....which i feel they already are. i really hate the idea of them having a "reality"-style show, which is the vibe i got from the few moments i watched "comic book men". it kinda bummed me out to see that "amc original series" intro come up for a show like that, when i (until now) have always associated that with their epic drama shows mad men, breaking bad, and TWD....now this crap.

Excellent news for The Walking Dead - I'd wager that having repeated marathons of previous episodes certainly help some people catch up on the show without having the buy the boxsets if they don't want, so it'll encourage more people in I'd think.
Good news for Comic Book Men too (I really enjoyed it - but I am also a huge fan of the Tell 'Em Steve-Dave podcast, as well as various other shows on the SModcast Podcast Network), they were hoping for 1 million so to get double that they must be pleased ... I just hope the figures hold up for them, but there'll probably be a bit of a dip for the second episode, but again if AMC do marathons repeating the series they could very well cement the audience for the show.
TWD however has been a real juggernaut - 8.1?! AWESOME! :)
I can't wait till Friday at 10pm on FXUK when I'll finally get to see 2x08!

He actually contradicted himself by saying that in this interview. On the Nerdist Writers Panel he is asked whether they sent the writers to set and he responds with something along the lines of having budget issues so no writers went. I've seen a video of Angela Kang on set so who knows what the truth is?
My understanding of the budget issues is that the startup costs involved with going into production and the high cost of the pilot inflated the average episode budget for the first season.

I don't know the comic book writer personally but it's his 'baby' and I think he'll continue to publish it in some format (paper or digital) for many years if not decades. It's actually already approaching it's 10th anniversary (10/2003) and the story hasn't covered a lot of ground, more of a slow burn. I believe the concept is finite and nothing like Superman/Batman/Spiderman. I like the idea of a clear beginning middle and end.

I think it's more a case of a minority shouting the loudest, while those who dig it have less to talk about - it's kind of like how a product on a website seems to get a lot of shitty reviews because it broke on them, but everyone else for whom it worked, don't have a reason to bitch so they say nothing. Not the same thing here at HPOTD - we'll talk about anything and everything zombie until the cows come home whether we loved it or loathed it, but I do think the complaints are overblown in apparent number and in critical terms.

Very nice indeed.
I also see Comic Book Men is at around 1.26m - so nowhere near TWD numbers, but still quite good for a fledgling show of it's style, I would have thought. I've been following it (especially as I'm an avid follower of the SModcast network - including the Tell Em Steve-Dave podcast, featuring those guys) and I've been absolutely loving it. If they'd show it in the UK I would definitely watch it, but I wouldn't be surprised it they can't be arse to shift it over here (same goes for Impractical Jokers - the original American version) ... anyway - excellent news regarding the growth of the core TWD audience. All those re-run marathons are a very good idea indeed - always provide a way for your audience to catch up before the new season kicks off.

It's the internet everyone has an opinion, everyone bitches, and everyone thinks they are right... then you have the trolls. Add it all together and you have a toxic soup of stupidity.

I'm with you Mr.G - I really enjoy Comic Book Men - the figures are nowhere near that of TWD, but that was always going to be the case. To those out there bitching incessantly about the show - don't fucking watch it then! AMC puts one reality show on, and folks proclaim it's the end of the universe, sheesh. Regarding the 'reality' of the show, as a keen listener to the Tell Em Steve-Dave podcast (now up to 103 episodes, featuring Bryan Johnson, Walt Flanagan, Bryan Quinn - from Impractical Jokers - and sometimes Ming Chen), I can say that how they appear on the show is how they appear in the podcast. Their characters are true, albeit tempered slightly for cable TV ... the language and topics of conversation are less fucked up than what they sometimes get into on the podcast.
Sure, the show is very tightly edited, but that's down to the editors - and it's not like they're hiding that it's tightly edited. They would benefit from tempering that scissor hand a bit, mind. I like the use of a podcast to bracket the show and provide necessary info for the laymen in the audience, and I've really enjoyed the show ... I pretty much never watch 'reality shows' beyond glancing through the channels and stopping on one for a few minutes (whatever it might be, Dog The Bounty Hunter, or something about various SWAT teams, or one on t'other night about people who bid on crap in those lock-ups when they've not paid the bills) ... it's quite rare for me to watch them generally. I watched The Osbornes when it was originally on, but haven't seen it since and have no interest in seeing it anymore. I watched Van Damme: Behind Closed Doors or whatever it was called last year (it was alright, a passing interest to fill in time) - however Comic Book Men I've found to be really entertaining, and returning by the way of the TESD podcast, it's true to those people featured on the episode.
As for 'worshipping' Smith though - to be fair, they've been best friends for decades.
...
Anyway - back to TWD - 9 million?! SWEET! Next stop - double figures! That's what I'm hoping for with 3x01.

The great news continues to flood in! They should always count DVR views, in my opinion. Excluding them seems a bit of an old fashioned, even snobbish, habit of those in charge of the official numbers. Fantastic that the show is doing so well! :)

Sounds great, but TVguide has turned into the TMZ of the television programming world. I'm not sure how comfortable I am believing their numbers...
If they are counting DVR recordings, do they know whether or not the viewer recorded the show to view at a later time, or just recorded while watching? Recording while watching could easily come close to making the numbers double. I record all my favorite shows, but watch them as they premiere....

Seeing as season 3 is getting closer and closer :hyper:, I think its time for some numbers:
The loss of Dish shouldn't hit them too hard as Dish only has a 13% market share. I think the viewers they lose via Dish will be regained due to increased marketing, marathon reruns, people discovering the show on DVD/Blu-ray, viewers changing provider etc.
The show averaged 5.25m for the first season and 6.9m viewers in season 2.
The season 1 premiere was 5.3m and the season 2 premiere was 7.3m. I reckon they will do 8m for season 3 possibly a lot more and if the pattern continues the average viewers over the whole season seem to mirror the premiere figures so an 8m average would be very nice indeed.
Im finding it difficult to judge the market "mood" as i've consciously taken a step back from the hype and info due to spoilers at the end of last season so i may be way way off.
Don't forget the season 2 finale had 9m. If it tops that for the premiere then it will be party time.
This season will also be crucial for the shows future from a ratings perspective. Mazzara has gone on record saying the he sees TWD as a 7 season show which seems to be the natural life span of a good tv series. As a TWD comic reader and zombie fan, I disagree strongly with Mazzara. There is plenty of story to use from the comic as well as adding the tv writers own mini arc's. The prison arc is great but a lot of good stuff happens after as well so i dont necessarily see seasons 3.0-4.5 being the peak of the show.
Roll on October 14/15th.

I remember reading that the season two finale raked in - once you counted +1 airings and DVR recordings - 11.1 million or something like that. I agree with your assumptions/theories, and aye, season three is a crucial season in a way because it's when a show really starts becoming the show that it will always be remembered as potentially. Season One is always tense as you might only get one season, and then season two is where you have to prove yourself, but also be very careful not to cock it up, and by the time season three rolls around you have to maintain the momentum - but on the plus side you've probably really figured out how the show works best - it's also the season where, in theory at least, the ratings should really pick up even more.
I do hope that TWD continues to be a ratings hit, and I'm very much excited for the show's return. :hyper:

The viewing habits of the wider public seem really strange due to how the numbers fluctuate. They also seem to miss some of the best episodes and then tune in for ones that, while good, are a bit lower in coolness than the previous week ... if that makes sense. There must be some people out there who are just watching random episodes ... and if there are, I hope they aren't breeding, because clearly they're insane if they're only watching some episodes of a quality drama series. :elol:
An extreme version of that would be something I read online somewhere - there was this guy who didn't like Breaking Bad - he'd only watched a couple of episodes from season one, then a random episode from season four, and then a random episode from season five, and shockingly, he couldn't understand why people dug the show. Well gee, maybe that's because you're watching it like a nutter.

Ditto.
Perhaps there will come a time when the audience has kind of had their fill, but it all depends on the stories and the vibrancy of those involved, I guess. The great thing for TWD is that it truly evolves - the characters, scenarios, locations, all of them are forever changing as it's a journey all of the time rather than wandering the destination you had arrived at from the very first episode, if that makes sense?
I read/heard somewhere - perhaps in a TWD related interview - where it was pointed out that the characters etc in TWD truly evolve. Rick is no longer the same man he was in 1x01. Meanwhile you've got Dexter (as an example), and has the main character changed all that much in seven seasons? It's a good show that I enjoy, but I have noticed that it never really seems to change.
Meanwhile you've got Breaking Bad (a great example of an evolving show) where Walt has completely changed - astonishingly so - or Boardwalk Empire where there is a definite arc to many/all the characters (e.g. Margaret Thompson nee Shroeder who has gone from downtrodden Irish house wife to gangster's moll who's well versed in manipulating the world around her to get what she wants, which can include revenge).
So as long as TWD continues to evolve and remain fresh, but also maintain a balance of the deep character stuff that keeps as emotionally engaged (and prone to utter shocks, like recently) and the bloodthirsty action elements to spice up the in-between bits, then it can certainly run for a good long while. Keeping it grounded within a relateable moral quagmire is important too of course - the success of the comics and the show is directly linked to the viewer being able to say "if I was in that situation, I'd do this..."

Amazing!
So will next week's numbers roughly maintain at this level, or dip after a slowdown in pace on 305?
It's weird how the numbers seem to dip for the best episodes with the biggest shocks or best reveals/new characters/new info etc.
Also, a slowdown in pace for a mere episode shouldn't be a worry at all - not that I'm saying that that's what you're saying, Aces, but there are a few morons out there who would genuinely be like "oh wtf, it was pedal to the metal like 3x01!" (such a thing wouldn't constitute satisfying writing, peaks and troughs are very necessary to maintain a good balance) ... where was I? Oh yeah, point being, there was a shitload more going on in 3x05 than there were in many of the front-seven of season two ... 3x05 was 'slow' compared to the utter chaos and seeming non-stop action of 3x01 and 3x04. I'd say 3x05 was 'faster' than most of the back-six of season two as well.
Again, not saying that you're genuinely complaining about the speed of the episode - indeed, as I've said there's nothing genuine to complain about, especially not relatively speaking - but there will be handful of numpties that will actually, honestly, genuinely think that ... the sort of people who only watch random episodes of TV shows (heathens! :elol:), thus resulting in the strange modest wobble in all viewings figures on all tv shows ... weird, strange people, so they are. :D

TWD has been consistently listed in the "Top 25" shows in TV Guide this season. If I recall correctly, there were two weeks it ranked 17th, and one week, 11th. This is pretty much unheard of. No. The reruns on the night. TWD drew 3.2m viewers for the 2nd viewing of the episode that just aired. Compare this to the premiere of season 5 of Mad Men which had its largest audience ever of 3.5m.

Well, I think TWD is safe for a good long while then - provided they keep up the quality, of course. :)
As a side note, I love Mad Men (got into it earlier this year and barged all five seasons over several weeks), and Breaking Bad likewise (another barged marathon over the summer). :)
However, The Walking Dead is my #1 AMC show ... in fact The Walking Dead is it as far as I'm concerned. I watch a bunch of shows, and love many of them, but TWD is an obsession. :D

I remember reading articles before the show was released, about every casting decision, leaked pictures, etc. It's insane how popular the show became though - it is simply a behemoth franchise at this point. Even the game (which I wasn't even fond of as you all know :b) won Game of the Year, and the comic is probably getting huge boosts in sales from the show.
Its pretty crazy that on this list:

TALKING DEAD is in 3rd place. I don't watch it much, but it's pretty damn impressive IMO that the talk show following Walking Dead is the third highest rated show of the night. Simply crazy how successful TWD has become.

I looked at the ratings of Lost yesterday, just out of curiosity to see how Walking Dead stacked up.

I guess it regularly had viewers in the 18 - 20 million range. If Walking Dead continues its slow rise with each finale, perhaps by the end of Season 5 we could expect Lost numbers? If ever? Hopefully such success will inspire Network TV to buck up their ideas and grow some balls - "Under the Dome" was watered down, dim-witted, paint-by-numbers, chock-full-o-filler bullshit; a total wasted opportunity ... Cable drama is routinely knocking Network drama for six.

There's quite a few shows on TV I really enjoy right now. Walking Dead obviously, and was also a Breaking Bad fan. New Sons of Anarchy has been great, it's been an awesome season of Boardwalk Empire, It's Always Sunny just ended a VERY strong season, South Park has been pretty good as well. Eastbound and Down is back with a vengeance, the new HBO show "Hello Ladies" is also pretty great. It's sad that TV is almost trumping cinema right now, although admittedly I rarely watch new movies.

I'm not entirely familiar with what shows are on what networks in America, but aren't most/all of those shows you mention on Cable or Subscription channels - i.e. not the "big seven" mainstream networks? That's what I was meaning - channels like NBC and ABC and the like, the sort of channels that pump out horseshit like "Under the Dome". Hopefully these great shows on 'non mainstream' channels will, at long last, inspire some more daring-do from them, not just sliding out cookie cutter, dumbed-down, paint-by-numbers, exposition-heavy clumps of slop. :sneaky::D
That's not to say there haven't been good - great, even - "big seven" network shows. The likes of 24 and Lost spring to mind instantly, but even they had their weaknesses, and at the moment - when it comes to quality drama - you have to look to Cable or Subscription channels in America, so it seems.

That's the best part about the ratings for TWD. AMC is a cable channel and these ratings are right up there with the big networks. It's pretty rare to see a cable program in the top ten list.

Yea, these particular shows are all on cable networks. I thought you were referring to channels like AMC vs. channels like HBO. HBO seems like a tier up from AMC-esque channels, which are themselves a tier up from CBS and NBC and whatnot. I would be surprised if "Resurrection" holds up to the same level in the ratings in the second week. Not that I've seen it, but it's usually the case that figures drop come the second episode after the curious-but-not-interested-enough give up. I was a big fan of "Les Revenants", so see no reason to watch the Americanised version whatsoever personally.
Still holding strong - and in the right places, too, as you point out.
I remember "Les Revenants" getting pimped out here in the UK as if it were a zombie show - it ain't - zombies and revenants are two totally different things. I wonder if the advertising for "Resurrection" was similarly dodgy in its representation.

I'd imagine the figure will rise again next week for the finale - those tent pole episodes usually draw the biggest numbers.
Always interesting how, after a big water cooler episode (e.g. last week), the following episode gets a boost ... and then, if that episode isn't 'as amazeballs' as the water cooler discussions of the previous week, then the following week sees a dip, but then usually that's got something really awesome in it. So, sometimes, the best episodes don't get the best numbers.

They've nailed this at AMC. With the break they basically have 2 premieres and 2 finales which inflates the average viewership.
I really wouldn't be surprised if season 5's premiere goes even higher.

Cor blimey guvnah! :stunned:
I was expecting an upswing for the finale, but wasn't expecting quite that sort of a swing - and just shy of the mid-season premiere's 15.8m!
The split season works quite well for TWD. The gap isn't that big, particularly when you count-in the festive season, and it allows you to have - in the case of season four - two smaller arcs for the two halves, and one big arc for the season as a whole.

Very solid indeed. I was thinking somewhere around 15 to 15.5 earlier today before I came here to see an update on the ratings.
Also - for the season 5 premiere - once those who recorded the show to watch later were factored in, the figure rose to 22.37 million!

Or a bit of a down/up/down tick for the middle episodes, and then a surge for the finale as so often seems to be the case. Premieres and finales get the biggest figures as those tend to be the 'must watch live right now' appointment viewing ... although, there are those curious folks who only watch some episodes of a show ... ... I just can't get my head around that whatsoever, especially in a drama where each episode links to the others. How would you know what was going on, missing major events, and failing to gain the full effect of certain events that you do witness etc.

A week off only two episodes in is looking rather silly now, isn't it? Although at 7.2m that's still a very good rating - Better Call Saul likewise started very strong and then slipped considerably over the course of season one (6.88m for 1x01 slipped to 2.53m for 1x10 ... 1x09 had the lowest rating of the season at 2.38m).
However, as we've seen before, these shows need time to grow and establish themselves. Hopefully FTWD ticks up again in the ratings as it really deserves to ... but what's the bet the media will have a field day and establish a narrative around this?

Fortunately both Better Call Saul and Fear The Walking Dead have already had their second seasons green lit. They're already deep into the work on the former, and they'll be getting on with the latter too. There'd still be a chance of something getting canned before production - but I'd say it's highly unlikely in FTWD's case.
They've seen ratings grow with their various shows. Breaking Bad - rightly hailed as a huge achievement - did relatively low numbers in season one, and took a long time to catch on, even up to its final eight episodes.

I'd be more interested to see what the ratings are the middle of next season after people know exactly what the show is about and the curiosity/novelty/newness has worn off. I think that will tell more about what this series base viewer number will be like.
I know many walking dead fans who gave the show a chance but it turned out not to be their speed so they're just kinda done with it.

Where are you getting the figures from that show the entire picture for Live plus those watching it recorded?
It'd make sense that FTWD hasn't got to 'appointment viewing' yet as it's only just started. While TWD still has plenty of people recording it for later, it has more 'appointment viewers' ... frankly, with a show like TWD, how could you watch it any other way if you have the choice? Spoilers are flying all over the shop the following morning so you can't do anything online until you've seen the episode.

Not everybody is online MZ. I work with people who love TWD but have zero interest in the Internet or the show beyond watching it on the telly.
The figures usually come from tvbythenumbers mostly and they have +3 and +7 days ratings later in the week.
Anyway,
The finale figures are quite surprising to me.
