Anybody else psyched for this as-of-yet-untitled film? Look up the preview on YouTube if you haven't seen it yet (it plays before Transformers). I haven't been this excited over a movie in a long time.

TRAILER: KQWFOgvPE20

I saw that trailer on the best week ever. Boy does it look crazy. It looks like a kickass monster movie. It looks like it has alot of potential. I think they were talking about this flick in another thread as well minus the vid. Thnx for the visual. :)

It's a good theory. Very plausible, although i'm sure there will be others before the movie's release.

uh, its the 2nd, but this one has more info, sans the trailer though.

1-18-08 Solved?
After much, much discussion, it seems the mystery (and title) of JJ Abrams' top-secret monster movie may have been solved. A very interesting (and plausible) theory has popped up on the internet. Take a look for yourself, see if it's true. Also behind the cut is the supposed title and poster.

Okay, so the apparent title is MONSTROUS. Some kid took a picture of a poster at a comic book store, which depicts a headless Statue of Liberty, with the title MONSTROUS spread out across the top and the release date 1-18-08 on the bottom.

clicky for pics.

THEORY--

If you look at the trailer you can see the number 3 being referenced to everywhere. The 63 degrees on the news channel, The 12:36, the 2004 ACE, numbers that are all dividable by 3.

Last, but not least, you hear the thundering monster sound three times, each sound accompanied by a different event.

Romans 1:18 "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness"

So what in biblical mythology has connections to the slew of references in the trailer? The three great monsters.

In Jewish belief, Behemoth is the primal unconquerable monster of the land, as Leviathan is the primal monster of the waters of the sea and Ziz the primordial monster of the sky.

1) The first monster roar is accompanied by an earthquake (Behemoth)
2) The second monster roar is accompanied by a huge fireball (Leviathan, for it can breathe fire)
3) The third monster roar is accompanied by the flying Statue of Liberty head (Ziz).

Not convinced?

The guy who says "maybe we can get a better view from the roof" has the Slusho logo on his shirt. Slusho is a classic J.J. Abrams icon, and it has appeared in both Alias and Lost, which are his shows.

Slusho.jp has, by now, been confirmed as a part of the viral marketing campaign revolving around 1-18-08. Japan. Strangely enough, the character Rob, who is present in the trailer, was gonna fly to Japan a day after that party and the monster events.

Let's have a look around on that site. Not all pages are accessible. But there is an odd feature about the pages that are available. The main page background is on land, the Downloads page background is on air, and the History page background is on sea.

Furthermore, the six buttons on the main page cause popups of various animals, namely a Horse, a Whale and a Bird. Behemoth, Leviathan, Ziz.

its really fallin' into clthulu type teritory, what with the giant ancient creatures and that, still the trailers obviously working like i said it would in the other thread so its definatly gonna make a huge bank at the box office from word of mouth alone.

I, too, am thinking it's a very good possibility of being another film about the Call of Cthulhu.

Abrams is releasing the title of the movie on Thursday so I guess we'll pretty much be able to figure out what the movie is when that happens.

Good, because the name "CLOVERFIELD" isn't exactly striking fear into the hearts of people.

that the reason they picked Cloverfield as a cover title was to keep people from being interested prematurely.

I thought that premature interest a.k.a. "hype" was a good thing?

I love giant monster movies, but these trailers are dumb as **** and I can't believe they've got everyone fooled (again). Remember the Hollywood abomination that was called Godzilla ten years ago? Sony tried to keep that project under wraps until the last minute, too, and there was a good reason for it (i.e. the actual movie sucked).

Despite all the cloak & dagger on Cloverfield, they've already given away too much:

- blatant overuse of shaky yet unbelievably sharp (not to mention widescreen!) hand-held video cam-style cinematography.

- "grungy" L.A. actors mug for the camera as NYC yuppie boneheads. No one in the target audience for this film will be able to identify with a single one of them.

- fake CGI Statue of Liberty head rolls down street without flattening a single person. It would have been thrown for at least a mile before reaching Manhattan.

The real deal with Cloverfield: Paramount lost to Universal in the mad scramble to secure remake rights to The Host out of South Korea (best damn monster flick in years). So it's a small wonder they're now employing the Lost guys to beat them to the punch with this film. Hasn't it been "leaked" that the monster in Cloverfield is named "the Parasite"? How much closer to "The Host" can you get?

Even more uber gayness: the characters from this movie have their own My Space pages. :p

I think it looks interesting - all from the point of view of someone's camera that was just roaming at a party.

I won't judge until I see the film.

You know if they kept it true to the quality of a real hand held there would be an uproar from people about how shotty the quality is.

It doesn't have to be true-to-life, but it also doesn't need to be so obvious. You can watch any episode of Law & Order for an example of how to properly integrate this same effect into a story. I doubt they ever utilize a tripod.

They could have also benefited by taking a page from the Law & Order canon on how to have actors effectively portray New Yorkers. Sony's Godzilla suffered from the exact same problem.

I too wanna see this movie, it certainly looks rather good.

But I totally agree about the fake handheld DV camera stuff, especially the fake tape glitches - I HATE THAT SHIITE, F*CK OFF WITH IT!

Either do a real-looking tape glitch, or don't bother. Grrrr!

Also, looking at the footage, it'd be better if they did a mix of DV type stuff, and other stuff that was filmed hand held but by someone not included in the movie - like they did on Saving Private Ryan on the beach sequence - just tell the cameraman to get stuck in, documentary 'in the moment' style and there you go.

And yes, fake wobble is annoying, and the picture is not true to the sort of DV camera those people would own, nowhere near for the most part. Also, why would those sort of people have a mounted light? Those sort of people would more than likely use night vision, or just have a dark room, or use existing light.

It's that sort of stretching of the DV aesthetic that I find pointless. If you want the documentary immediacy, either:

1) Write it from the point of view of a news crew(s)
2) Do it 'Private Ryan style' (as previously mentioned)

The Zombie Diaries did FPS DV shooting properly, so it peeves me off when Hollywood emulates it with really expensive camera rigs, set-ups and editing.

And then finding ways to get big sights 'caught first hand' is just pushing it. Either do it as-true-as-life, or do it from a news cameraman's POV ... or 'do it Private Ryan style'.

Anyway, aside from that stylistic grievance, looks like it should be fun...hopefully it lives up to the "we're going to cock tease you for months without showing you anything" hype.

I can't wait for this movie. But sadly, I don't think it will be Cthulu. The movie studio producing this don't have the rights. They *could* base the movie off the Cthulu legends, and not just refer to it as such, but who knows?

I think it's another big monster movie flick. And once again, poor New York takes the brunt of it.

It IS another giant monster movie.

Also, I think NYC takes it most of the time because they have the most area for destruction and action. We don't have another city in this country with that many skyscrapers that a monster can destroy!

LAND OF THE DEAD! :)

Well...it did for me and the other Land-Lovers. :D

Sorry, couldn't resist popping that in there.

I duno, hype often leads to downed expectations - the problem the Land-Haters had.

Sorry, went back to Land again, what can I say, I love it. Anyway...erm...another monster mashes up New Yoik eh...damn...:p

I wasn't a huge fan of Land, but even if I was, I wouldn't classify it as a movie living up to it's hype.... because it wasn't really hyped up. It kinda just sat under the radar, except among us zed heads, until right before it's release.

Ha, but then perhaps the problem with LAND is not that it lived up to hype, but that it was a "mainstream film."

It was trick question! :D

Lovecraft's stuff has passed into public domain. No rights required. Having said that, I think based on what I've read it's probably an original creation, not based on anything. The fake "Slusho" website swayed me in that direction, particularly the history.

lovecraft would be good but id lvoe for it to be a proper godzilla film with the real thing, not the mutant hermaphrodite iguana form the american "reinvisioning"

Well, despite the fact that I was spreading the gospel of this movie before it came out and was probably the most excited person on the East Coast... I didn't see the movie until just now.

Wow, I LOVED it. Friggin intense as hell... there were times when my heart was pounding pretty hard. My only complaint was the ending...

I think it should have ended when the helicopter crashed. The scene with Rob and Beth in the tunnel was pretty lame and un-necessary, if you ask me.

I went through some of the Cloverfield threads here and it seems some members don't/didn't think there was an explanation as to where the monster came from. But, I suggest you go back and re-watch the movie, or at least this scene:

During the scene in which Rob & Beth are on the ferris wheel, they pan the camera past the ocean. When this is done, you can see the monster, in the distance, falling from the sky into the ocean. This would mean the monster fell from outer space, somehow.

Danny

i knew where it came from, it was pretty blunt if you followed the viral stuff, but honestly, take away the way its filmed and cloverfield is, in my meaningless and totally personal opinion, a fun theme park ride but a boring movie.

had it been in 3d it would have been an epic experience, but its, to quote the constant sage randal graves (not an intentional rhyme) "its just a film about walking!"

ive been very harsh on lots of films and looked back later and grown quite fond of them, one example being hancock, another to a lesser extent being the happening believe it or not. but this has constantly left a bad taste in my mouth. i even bought the dvd to see if it was different, but every time i pick up the case i get that distaste back and put it on the shelf again and watch the big lebowski or american splendor or something instead.

but, like i said thats just me, and i think this is one of those films were you shouldn't take a review off any site as representative off this because no two people agree on it exactly, if you loved it good for you, better to be entertained than left bitter.

and i DO use this to stand by saying i liked sweeny todd, even if the emo kids said the rest of us couldn't!

-if your wondering what made me change my view on the happening its really very simple.

i watched max payne.
