Two and a Half Men canceled

Wow, I remember the first time my wife introduced me to this show. After I had watched the episode, she was talking about how Sheen did a great job with his role. And I responded with. "So let me get this straight. Charlie Sheen is playing a role where he's a rich, womanizing drunk?" Wife. "Yeah." I shrug. "It doesn't take a whole lot of acting talent to pretend to be what you are." Still a funny show though.

I've seen maybe three or four episodes of this show and was surprised to find that they had their funny moments. It's a family-friendly 'Friends' kind of funny, but it got a few chuckles out of me. I've noticed that people tend to forget that Sheen is actually a pretty decent comedian. Ricky Wild Thing, anyone? Topper Harley? Carl Taylor?

Joey's big problem was that it wasn't Friends, and it came hot on the heels of Friends - plus the characters weren't anywhere near as likeable (or interesting) as those on Friends. Two and a Half Men - I've watched it since the very beginning, and sometimes it's funny, and sometimes it's dreadful - and quite frankly this 8th season hasn't done anything new (for the show), so it's gotten very tired, very-very-very-very-very predictable, plots are being re-used from earlier episodes, and frankly after all the bullshit Sheen has been getting up to, it makes his 'drunk rich guy' schtick decidedly less entertaining. But yeah, it's no acting stretch for him - he doesn't even have to have a different name to his own. In fact, anyone remember when he played "Charlie" on Spin City after Fox left the show? Another womanising drinker/gambler ... but not as drunk, or distasteful. As a viewer I don't "like" Charlie Harper - I only laugh AT the character, when I laugh, which this season has been very rare indeed ... meanwhile a royal fuck-up like Hank Moody on Californication (love that show) is a total bugger up, but you can't help but love the guy. That's how you play a booze-addled, womanising cluster-fuck of a person - kudos to Duchovny for that performance (although it is funny how many of his roles involve him shagging ) ... ... Charlie Harper has descended into a quite sad non-parody of the actor himself. I bet the crew are pissed off - they've got to find jobs to fill in the time, and they've already lost out on a bunch of pay. And all because, in the immortal words of Kevin Smith, Charlie Sheen "couldn't handle his fucking high".

Yeah, the show was still good when he joined after Fox - and the 'boozy womaniser' schtick was fresh and he was in his 30s ... now it's tired and sad and he's looking evermore tired and washed out with all the booze, drugs, and porn stars. One day they will get what the joke is, but that aint today Love me some 30 Rock. Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghey are a perfect team (and Matt Damon had a great recurring role on it recently). The natural political leaning of the shoe will obviously be Democrat, what comedy shows aren't you know, but 30 Rock does a good job of balancing it out where everybody can be a hero and a freak at the same time no matter what side of the political debate they're on - but the sort of Lefty that would call 30 Rock "too right wing" is the sort of Lefty who isn't happy unless every single person from anywhere-on/near/vaguely-related-to the Right is called a cunt. In other words - nonsense, nor humorous, nor satirical. And frankly, Jack is awesome. Also love me some Cougar Town - I really dig that show, and I have to say, I think I dig it more than Scrubs (and I really liked that show). The Big Bang Theory is also good fun, albeit predictable most of the time, but it is good fun (I had originally expected it to be drivel, but was pleasantly surprised). And Californication, of course - LOVE that show.

don't watch that much tv these days, and have never seen more than a few minutes of 2 1/2 men, but from what i heard in that interview, sheen came off as an arrogant prick who needs to be punched in the mouth and brought back down to earth.

Seemed? This show was almost as unfunny as Family Guy to me, which is a hard feat to accomplish. Personally, I'm finishing up the final episodes of Soap on Netflix. Chester Tate like a mofo!!!

The last sitcom worth a shit that I religiously watched was "Frasier". As far as I'm concerned, nothing will ever hold a torch to "Frasier" -- except "Cheers" -- but "Cheers" doesn't count because that was a precursor to "Frasier" and the profound greatness of that show. Niles: Frasier, we've had a flat in our car! Frasier: Quick, Niles, open the glove compartment for the emergency plan! -- Niles opens glovebox -- Niles: Here it is Frasier, the spare cellphone programed for AAA! Damnit, I miss Dr. Frasier Crane! j.p.

Well, just to clarify, it's only been cancelled for the remainder of this 8th season ... so, providing Sheen doesn't fuck up even more, and the spat with the producers doesn't go into overdrive, it'll be back for a 9th season as planned. To be honest though, it needs putting down as a show. It's overstayed its welcome, it's now repeating itself endlessly, and even the smutty metaphors aren't creative anymore ... the spectacle of a bowling-shirted booze hound womaniser has gradually moved away from chucklesome to just sad and pathetic. After 8 seasons the characters are barely any further forward than they were the best part of a decade ago.
