Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. 50m is not much but still enough to pack a hell of a wallop. i've actually stood on the rim of the Barringer Crater in AZ. it was made by an asteroid only 50m in diameter going about 13km/s. it left a crater that is 1,200m wide and about 170m deep. nothing that would have "global" implications but it would make an immense mess of a city.

... and similar to what is presumed to have caused the Tunguska event in 1908 I believe...

As for 2012DA14, going to be fascinating to see what Earth bound optics can see of it. I doubt much detail...
