dumb question but which version of dawn do I have? (pics)

I was talking to a friend the other day and mentioned I had a directors cut of dawn so we decided to watch it. During the film he kept pointing out that it was not the directors cut due to differences in scenes from his directors cut DVD (which I have not seen). I am well aware of the many different edits and cuts of the film and just wondered which version this actually is if it's not the directors cut as stated on the box. My video has the machette to head scene aswell as the screwdriver in head kill but not the headshot in the apartment. It also has a few other scenes that are not in my other dawn VHS which I taped from BBC 2 about 15 years ago. I am in the UK if that makes any difference. One more question, which in the fans eyes is the best version to own? PS sorry for the crappy pics.

i can't tell which version of dawn you have by looking at that cover. As a matter of fact i've never seen it for sale here in the states. There are over 15 different covers depending on which country you're in. now as to which version you should get,a couple of months ago i faced the same dilema. I went with the $50 ultimate edition. It comes with the U.S. theatrical versionwith commentary from GAR, his wife christine and Tom Savini- The extended Version with commentary from Richard P. Rubenstein-The European Version with commentary from the four lead actors in the film and yet a fourth disc that is absolutely loaded with over 3 1/2 hours of extras. I was a lttle bit wary due to the high pricetag at first but i can tell you that it was worth every penny. You will not be disapointed. Each version has extra scenes/scene extentions that are not found on the others. I first saw Dawn about 20 years ago and i came across about fifteen minutes of film footage that i had never seen before. I got mine from suncoast. its a kind over in britain that does tons of em you find em nowadays at poundland and the preowned section of gamestation, never got it myself as i had to be a label whore and get the ''offical'' looking box art one. surprisingly i didnt know they did a dawn one i thought they only did night.

That's the Extended Cut (I have the very same video), it was called the "Director's Cut" here in the UK when it was released back in 1997. I have an interview in SFX magazine (from 1997) where there is a GAR interview and he says that it's the Extended Cut, the Director's Cut is actually the Theatrical Cut (it's how GAR sees it himself). That video, released by BMG, is the Extended Cut (2 hours 20 minutes). It was cut by 6 seconds (including a trim to the arm bite and no head explosion, the kid zombies being shot is also trimmed quite considerably).

We've got plenty of VHS players at home, we have two DVD players (and of course my computers do them). But yeah, I still use VHS quite a lot. I've got a huge stash of films on VHS (bought them or recorded films off TV ... or dubbed), and for recording something I'm only gonna watch once then I use a VHS. So I use them quite a bit. It's rare for me to watch a film that isn't either downloaded or on DVD, but I recently watched Battle Royale on a VHS...

i use my vhs all the time. just like minion i also have a huge collection of videos mostly horror and i still record stuff off tv. there are lots of good movies out there that video is the only format you can view them on because they dont have a dvd release. long live VHS

Also it's just weird watching a video nasty on a special edition, double disc, digitally remastered DVD ... it's just not the same as a grubby video from the back of the video shop, that stinks of cigarettes, and has dirty/sticky patches from where stickers used to be. The video should also not be of high quality either - that's what you really want for viewing a video nasty. DVD has lost that special feeling, kids today eh, all spoiled with their Ultimate Edition Teletubbies DVDs and whatnot.

I will never give up my VHS, NEVER I SAY!!!!!! I have over 300 horror movies on VHS, some that can not be found on DVD. On top of that, it would cost me a fortune to replace them all. AND, I agree, there is just something nostalgic about watching an old horror film on the grainy, poor quality VHS. Here one for you guys, I have an old copy of night of the living dead on BETA. This was the very first "home movie" I ever owned. My dad bought it for me whne I begged and begged! Long live VHS!!!!!

Could VHS be the new Laserdisc? Not in terms of quality or content, but in terms of fandom and nostalgia? I remember a friend of mine at Uni wrote an essay for one course (Media & Cultural Theory) about the theory behind the "vibe" of VHS and why DVD will never match up, I remember being so chuffed talking to him about it as I'd discovered (finally) someone who thought exactly the same way about VHS. *sigh*...VHS...those were the days, dubbing in real-time *chuckles*, colour bleeding/grain, the growing deterioration at the bottom and/or top of the screen ... ahhh those were indeed the days. You'd never find a movie getting made called "DVD-Drome" would ya?
